Beginning M, 7/20 - 8/17/26, City of Ann Arbor
When: Monday, July 20 – Monday, August 17
What: Beginning Monday, July 20, 2026, the intersection of North University Avenue and Fletcher Street will be fully closed to vehicular traffic as part of the North University Avenue and Thayer Street construction project.
Why: The intersection will be closed to allow crews to install underground utilities and reconstruct the intersection in preparation for reopening the north and east approaches for the University of Michigan fall semester. Detour routes and other travel impacts are listed below:

Westbound North University / Geddes vehicles and cyclists traveling on North University Avenue/Geddes Avenue will be detoured south on Washtenaw Avenue, then west on Hill Street, then north on State Street to North University Avenue.

Eastbound North University vehicles and cyclists traveling on North University Avenue will be detoured south on State Street, then east on Hill Street, then north on Washtenaw Avenue, then west on Geddes Avenue to North University Avenue.

Southbound Fletcher Street traffic will follow East Washington Street to State Street to North University, or Huron Street to Washtenaw Avenue to Geddes Road.
It is recommended to plan ahead and select alternate routes to minimize delays, particularly during peak travel periods. For those who travel near the closed intersection, please drive at slower speeds and use caution to help ensure the safety of construction workers, all motorists, and pedestrians. Road Closure - Willard Street between Church Street and South Forest Avenue (7 AM, Tuesday, July 14- 7 AM, Wednesday, July 15)
Private developments will require a full closure of Willard Street for construction work. Willard Street will be fully closed to vehicular traffic. The following detours will be in place:

Local access and access to Willard Street will be maintained via South Forest Avenue.

Pedestrian access will be managed by the development at 625 Church Street and is currently under review. A protected pedestrian walkway will be installed once approved.

EARLY NOTICE: Intersection Closure - Fletcher Street and North University Avenue (July 20 - August 16)

Multiple Road Closures for Ann Arbor Art Fair (July 14-19)
Segments of the following roads are anticipated to be closed for the Ann Arbor Art Fair beginning at 6 AM on Tuesday, July 14 and lasting very early into the morning on Sunday, July 19. Please see the attached map for the extent of the closures.

East Liberty Avenue between Ashley Street and State Street

Thompson Street between Liberty Street and 326 Thompson Street (Maynard Street Parking Structure), with access to the garage available from the Thompson Street and William Street intersection

Maynard Street from Liberty Street to 436 Maynard Street (a half block south of William Street)

William Street from Thompson Street to State Street, with the intersection of Thompson Street and William Street open

South State Street from Madison Street to Washington Street

North University Avenue from State Street to Fletcher Street

East Washington Street from Thayer Street to Fletcher Street

South University Avenue from State Street to Church Street

Road closure change - West Medical Center Drive entrance at Catherine Street (Saturday, July 11)

Asphalt paving is scheduled for July 11. The following detours will be in place:

Emergency vehicle access will be maintained.

Zina Pitcher remains closed south of Ann Street.

Through traffic lanes remain open on Catherine Street and Ann Street.

A new sidewalk will be installed on the west side of West Medical Center Drive, and the new midblock crosswalk (across Catherine Street before Zina Pitcher Place) will not open until after paving on Saturday, July 11
Early notice - Ann Street will be open east of Zina Pitcher with no construction planned for the week of Housing Move-In (August 24-28).

Sidewalks and bus stop closure - DTE gas line (July 11 - July 13)
The sidewalk and bus stop on Observatory Street toward the Ann Street intersection will be closed beginning July 11 through July 13. The following detours will be in place:

Vehicular traffic in both directions will be maintained.

On Ann Street, an excavation will be covered/plated for access to the sidewalk and roadway by the end of the day Monday (7/13).

Closure of East Kingsley Street between North State Street and Cornwell Drive and Closure of North State Street at the intersection with East Kingsley Street. (9 AM, Monday, July 13 - mid-August)
East Kingsley will be closed for utilities, curb and road resurfacing to take place as part of Phase 2 of the Ingalls Kingsley Water Main Project. The following detours will be in place:
Beginning July 13, 2026 -
Westbound vehicular traffic on East Kingsley Street between North State Street and Cornwell Place will be detoured west on Catherine Street and north on North Division Street.
Beginning July 20, 2026 -
Northbound vehicle traffic on North State Street will be detoured west on Catherine Street, north on N. Division Street and east on High Street.

Southbound vehicle traffic on North State Street will be detoured east on Fuller Street, south on Glen Ave, west on Catherine Street and south on North State Street.

Emergency vehicles are advised to follow the posted detour.

Pedestrian traffic will be maintained on East Kingsley Street.
