Traffic and Parking Changes - 2026 Fall Move-In Campus-Wide - August 22-30 
Fall 2026 move-in will bring changes to the usual traffic and parking patterns throughout the area during early move-in, August 22-25, and through Undergraduate move-in, August 26-30. The immediate vicinity of residence halls will see traffic-flow alterations from 7:30 AM - 8 PM, August 24-29. Historically, Wednesday and Thursday of move-in are the busiest dates.

Traffic alterations across the city of Ann Arbor include:

• South Division Street: One-way traffic flow northbound between East Hoover and Hill streets.

• Greene Street: One-way traffic flow northbound between East Hoover and Hill streets.

• Thompson Street: One-way traffic flow southbound from East Jefferson to Packard streets.

• East Madison Street: One-way traffic flow eastbound between Thompson and State streets. In addition, one-way traffic flow eastbound between South Division and Thompson streets.

• East Ann Street: One-way traffic flows eastbound from Zina Pitcher to Observatory streets.

• Observatory Street: One-way traffic flows southbound between East Ann and Geddes streets.

• East Washington Street: One-way traffic flows westbound from Fletcher and South Thayer streets.
   

Most, if not all, parking meters in the immediate vicinity of residence halls will be bagged and reserved for students and families who display the proper move-in unloading permit.

 

Additional parking changes will affect university parking lots and structures that will be converted to move-in use only for the duration of the program.

 

University lots and structures that will be converted to move-in only are as follows:

 

• Lot M-28 (on Washington Heights).

• Lot M-95 (just east of Markley Hall — west half of lot dedicated to move-in).

• Lot E-1 (on North University Court across from Stockwell Hall).

• Palmer Parking Structure (N-26): All visitor parking will be for move-in participants.

• W16 (“Triangle”) Lot: Thompson at Madison and Packard will be controlled for move-in.

• Lot NC32 (Baits drive south of Baits 2): 20 spaces reserved for move-in participants.

• Lot SC2 (Between Hoover and Greene Streets) will be controlled for move-in.

• Lot SC35 (Between Keech and E Hoover Streets) will be controlled for move-in.

• Lot SC36 (Keech at S Main Street) will be controlled for move-in.

• Lot SC41 (E Hoover off S Main Street) will be controlled for move-in.
   

Department of Public Safety and Security officers will be on site during move-in and will help maintain efficient traffic flow in residence hall areas.

Packard Street closure change - Packard Street closure between Main Street and Division Street (Monday, August 17 - Anticipated November) 

The next phase for the Packard Street project shifts the road closure of Packard Street from South Main Street to Division Street. The Division-Packard-Madison intersection, as well as Packard Street between Division Street and State Street, will reopen during this phase The following detours will be in place:

• Northbound vehicles traveling on Packard Street will detour north onto Division Street, then west onto East William Street, then south onto South Main Street.

• Southbound vehicles traveling towards Packard Street will detour south on South Main Street, then east on Hill Street.

• Temporary two-way traffic will be implemented on South Fifth Avenue between Packard Street and East Jefferson Street.

• Emergency vehicles are advised to follow the posted detour; however, access to driveways within the closure will be maintained.

Intersection Opening - North University Avenue and Fletcher Street (Monday, August 17) 

As the roadway project moves to the next phase of construction, the intersection of North University Avenue and Fletcher Street will reopen Monday, August 17. North University will remain closed west of the intersection.

Pedestrian Bridge Closure - Hadley Family Recreation & Well-Being Center pedestrian bridge (6 AM, Thursday, August 6 - no later than Wednesday morning, August 26) 

• The Hadley Family Recreation & Well-Being Center pedestrian bridge will be closed from Thursday, August 6 - no later than Wednesday morning, August 26 to allow for repairs and recoating. The following detours will be in place: 

  • Northbound, the Palmer pedestrian bridge will remain open for a detour

  • Southbound to Observatory, the Geddes Avenue and Washtenaw Avenue crosswalk will serve as a detou

Closure of South Fourth Avenue between East Madison Street and Packard Street (8 AM, Wednesday, August 5 - 5 PM, Thursday, August 21)

DTE will be completing work causing South Fourth Avenue to close between East Madison Street and Packard Street August 5-21. The following detours will be in place: 

• Northbound South Fourth Avenue traffic coming from East Madison Street will be detoured north on South Main Street to east on Packard Street and back to South Fourth Avenue.

• Southbound South Fourth Avenue traffic will be detoured east on Packard Street, south on South Fifth Avenue to west on East Madison Street and back to South Fourth Avenue.

• Pedestrian sidewalk traffic will be maintained.
