For many of us, taking the spring and summer terms off doesn't necessarily equate to getting a break. Whether we move back home, head into an internship, take on summer work, or have a busy travel schedule, it's easy to pack this time as full as the regular academic year. So, how can we--with intentionality--take time to feel the summer breeze? Here are some ideas.

During the summer, one of my main priorities is making money and staying productive. For the past few years, my summers have mostly been focused on working, taking classes, and trying to stay on top of my responsibilities. It has been difficult at times because I have not had many real breaks or vacations, but I remind myself that I am working toward graduating and building a better future for myself.
At the same time, I try to take advantage of the summer by improving myself physically and mentally. I spend a lot of time at the gym and focus on my diet because I want to become healthier and more disciplined. I also play soccer at least once or twice a week, which helps me stay active, clear my mind, and enjoy time outside. Playing soccer is one of the ways I take a break from school and work because it helps me relax while still doing something good for my body.
When I need a more relaxed break, I sometimes play video games or spend time with friends. These small breaks help me recharge, especially when I feel overwhelmed from working or studying. I have not taken a real vacation or trip in a long time, but I want to start being more intentional about that. I am realizing that taking care of myself is not only about working hard, but also about giving myself time to rest, enjoy life, and make memories.

During the summer, I like to take advantage of the warm weather and the extra time that I have compared to the school year (especially on the weekends). The warm weather means it is a great time to explore nature. One way I take a break from the business of the world during the summer is taking nature walks to find pretty flowers, cool leaves, or some forgeable plants. There are a plethora of wild mulberries near where I live so I make sure to hit those on the way in or out. I have also started a garden this summer. My porch has some containers of soil that feature broccoli, cabbage, and squash plants that I will hopefully be harvesting later this season!
The warmer weather also means a warmer water temperature in the Great Lakes and the other waterways in and around Michigan. I enjoy kayaking, canoeing, and paddle boarding on still and running water. Kayaking and tubing at Argo Park or Gallup Park are activities on my to-do list during the months of July and August. The fresh air, exercise, and time to not think of work or other obligations are always welcomed in my summer plans!
The extra time also allows me to partake in an array of crafting activities. My go-to crafts are crocheting, knitting, and sewing. This summer, I am working on a crochet shirt commissioned by my sister along with whatever other projects come to mind. As a bonus, crocheting and knitting can lower blood pressure and reduce stress, a fun activity that is also good for your health!

Summer break has been pretty busy for me so far. Most of my days at school are filled with studying and doing research, which can get a bit exhausting if I don't take breaks. Even though my schedule is packed, I am still trying my best to find some fun and enjoy this hot weather. For me, the absolute best way to relax and recharge is by sharing my love for soccer with my friends.
Lately, we have been spending almost all our free time catching the World Cup matches. Whether we are crowding around the TV at my apartment with some cold drinks or finding a big screen on campus between study sessions, the excitement is always there. The soccer atmosphere right now is just amazing. What I love most is running into people who support all kinds of different national teams. We often end up having friendly conversations and joking around with total strangers, which makes the whole school feel like a big, welcoming global community.
Besides watching the big games on TV, we also love going out to support our local Ann Arbor women’s soccer team. Walking into the stadium with a warm summer breeze on my face is the perfect way to wind down after a long day of academic work. The community vibe here is incredibly strong. You can see neighbors, students, and local families all cheering together under the evening sun, feeling proud of our town. I always make sure to take a few photos of the bright green field and my friends laughing in the stands. Looking back at these pictures later is a great reminder to step away from work and enjoy the present. It really is the best kind of self-care I could ask for this summer.
