As a senior at the University of Michigan, my journey as an architecture student has been both challenging and incredibly rewarding. One of the most valuable experiences I’ve had is being part of my professional fraternity. Having an upper division student as a mentor has been a game changer for me. It’s reassuring to have someone who has already experienced the intense workload and unique challenges of architecture school. They’ve been through it all—from late-night studio sessions to handling multiple design projects—and their advice has helped me tremendously. Whether it’s guidance on how to develop ideas or use three-dimensional computing programs, having someone who’s “been there, done that” has made the process a lot less overwhelming.

Another key benefit is networking. In architecture, connections are everything. Being part of a professional architecture fraternity has allowed me to network with other upper division students and alumni. These connections have been invaluable, offering me insights into the professional world that I might not have otherwise had access to. It has connected me with alumni who are already working in the field, providing opportunities for portfolio reviews and internships, as well as advice on how to approach the job market. They’ve shared their experiences, from starting their first job to navigating career transitions, helping me feel more prepared as I approach graduation.

Moreover, being part of the mentorship program has built my confidence in classes—having someone to talk through my ideas and suggest improvements has been incredibly helpful. My mentor has even helped me rehearse architecture presentations before the real one. Although we bonded over architecture, we’ve become closer and now assist each other in different areas.

Overall, the support system I’ve gained at Taubman College has been instrumental in helping me grow both academically and professionally. As I look ahead to my career in architecture, I feel confident knowing that I have a strong network of mentors and peers offering support every step of the way.
