Starting college as a pre-dental student and Psychology major was an exciting yet overwhelming experience. Navigating through the maze of academic support, extracurricular activities, and social opportunities felt challenging.
Initially, finding the right resources was a challenge. The campus was vast and so were the resources. However, narrowing my search to just my major was helpful and for the limitless clubs, I narrowed it down to clubs I was genuinely interested in and found fun.
Making friends was another hurdle. The social dynamics of college were different from high school, and it took time to find my place. I joined clubs and also started to talk to other students in my classes. Finding friends in classes is easier since all of you might be taking a class with similar interests in mind. Moreover, you could start a study group!
Finding the right place to fit in for extracurriculars took me a while; however, my Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) for my research lab, Harini Babu, was extremely supportive. The lab provided me with hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of the psychology field. Harini took the time to explain complex concepts pertaining to the research, guided me through research work, and offered career advice pertaining to Psychology. She became someone I can rely on for any sort of help.
Through my involvement in the lab, I began to connect with other students who shared similar interests and these connections gradually turned into friendships. The lab became a place where I enjoyed being there!
Overcoming the feeling of being overwhelmed, initially, required persistence and the willingness to seek help. I learned to take advantage of the resources available, even if it meant stepping out of my comfort zone. The academic workshops, advising services, and student organizations all played a role in my journey. The journey was also made easier by Harini, who took me in and helped me delve into the Psychology field, specifically cognition.
In retrospect, the overwhelming feeling was a part of the growth process. It pushed me to explore, ask questions, and build resilience. The challenges I faced in finding resources and making friends ultimately led to personal and academic growth. Today, I feel more confident and equipped to tackle future challenges, knowing that I have the support and skills to succeed at Michigan and beyond!
