No relationship is perfect, especially when it comes to roommates. For many of us, living with friends or acquaintances is a new experience, and sometimes a frustrating one! But fear not, there are plenty of tips, techniques, and resources that you can apply to turn your dorm, house, or apartment into a home.
First and foremost, learn to respect common spaces. No one’s going to be picking up after you anymore, so it’s important that you do your part. Second, honesty is the best policy. If something is bugging you, bring it up with your roommate in a calm and friendly way. Resolving an issue before it gets out of hand is always the best route.
However, if you find yourself in a roommate dispute the Office of Student Conflict Resolution (OSCR) has several resources to help you bring back the peace. On their website, OSCR talks about four main things to keep in mind if you are in a disagreement. Respect, uncovering the real issue, collaboration, and choosing your battles are the four key factors in any conflict. Always keep a level head, and try going to a neutral location where each party can talk freely about what is bothering them. If that’s not enough, you can always visit OSCR on the first floor of the Student Activities Building.
Everyone goes through some issues with a roommate at sometime or another; it’s natural when you’re spending so much time together. Just remember these tips, and do your best to compromise.
