Trying to enjoy the winter weather but not sure how? This is your go-to guide for making the most out of Michigan’s snowy season! It’s safe to say that winter, and especially the holiday season, in Ann Arbor is magical. While just walking from place to place can provide you with plenty of cheer, here are a few activities that I personally love to do this time of year!
After the first big snow, many students like to grab a lunch tray and sled down the hills of north campus, The Arb, or the hill campus area. We would encourage you to buy a sled though. This is a favorite pastime for many students!
Another favorite winter activity is ice skating! Head over to Yost Ice Arena for public skate. General times for open skate are available through the online schedule. Be sure to check because occasionally times change. Bring your own skates or rent some for just a few dollars. Students even get discounted prices with their MCard! It is the perfect group activity for people of all ages, so definitely try it out! Get up and get active.
Cross Country Skiing
Give cross-country skiing a try! There are multiple places in Ann Arbor that offer miles of cross-country trails as well as ski rentals. Cross-country skiing is a fun, healthy way to stay active and still enjoy the beauty of wintertime. Dexter-Huron Metro Park, Hudson Hills Metropark, Stinchfield Woods, and Rolling Hills Park are just a few suggestions for local places to get started. For rental information, contact the Michigan Outdoor Adventures Rental Center at (734) 764-3967.
Outdoor Adventures Trips
Feeling adventurous? You can rent out plenty of supplies like backpacks, sleeping bags, tents, cooking stoves, canoes/kayaks, snowshoes, yard games, and much more! Here’s the equipment list. The coolest part of Outdoor Adventure is that they host fun trips where you can ski, rock climb, hike, paddle, and backpack. Here’s the list for upcoming trips and registration. I plan to go on a trip before I graduate!
If you’re feeling less athletically inclined, go for a walk and explore a new part of town. Wander beyond the company of your familiar neighbors and see what else Ann Arbor has to offer. You could take a stroll down Main Street and window shop or even find some cute holiday gifts. It’s extra beautiful when the trees lining the streets have lights strung up. Expand your local-horizons and familiarize yourself with something new.
If the day proves too cold to go outside, scurry on over to a local movie theater to catch a flick. The Michigan and State Theaters are great on-campus options. Look out for those student discounts! This could be a fun excuse to take a break after studying during these cold winter months. Finish the night off with a cup of hot coco and a cozy fireplace!
Snowballs and Snow People
A simple way to have fun is to build snow people and have snowball fights with friends.
Get some friends together and spread some cheer for all to hear. There have been organized events for people to carol around campus, so keep an eye out on our Happening @ Michigan events calendar (events.umich.edu).
