Best Buddies is a voluntary international organization that matches U-M students with peers from Washtenaw County who have intellectual and developmental disabilities to form one-on-one friendships and raise awareness about disabilities. The University of Michigan chapter has been creating friendships for twenty years with events such as holiday parties, sporting events, and talent shows, which are great opportunities for students to hang out with their buddies as well as the other members of Best Buddies. Best Buddies is all about enhancing the lives of people with disabilities and providing opportunities for friendships between students and community members. Not only will you be creating lifelong friendships but you will also diversify your educational experience and confront important social issues to make a difference in the community. If you are interested in this organization, please visit bestbuddiesonline.org and make sure to apply in the fall!
Although the Best Buddies organization only recruits new members in September, there are still ways to get involved. On Sunday March 24th, the University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University Best Buddies chapters are teaming up to put on a Friendship Walk in the community. The purpose of this walk is to raise awareness about disabilities, promote inclusion, as well as fundraise for both U of M and EMU Best Buddies programs. There will be a 1-mile walk around Gallup Park, followed by food and refreshments, as well as music, and even live entertainment by some of the buddies. Anyone is welcome to register for the walk and this fee includes a t-shirt, pizza and refreshments, and more. You can also help by donating to the college members and buddies through the website: http://www.firstgiving.com/bestbuddiesmichigan/bbmi-friendship-walk.
